Treat yourself to a new needle occasionally you deserve it! Point: all needles arent sharp. Some have fancy names, hinting at their original use (my personal favorite is Milliners), and some have names that are unhelpfully utilitarian (Im looking at you, Sharps). Thanks for creating such a useful quilting tool! An embroidery needle is one option to try (theyre basically Sharps with a longer eye to allow for more strands of thread). If youre looking to have some fun playing with thread weights (such as 12wt thread or floss), Id suggest picking up a needle with a larger eye to accommodate the heavier thread. They come in a bunch of different sizes: the lower sizes (2-4) are better for medium/heavy fabrics, the mid range (5-10) are for light/medium fabrics, and the top numbers are best for fine fabrics. Lisa hasnt steered me wrong yet with her tips so Ive ordered these and I dont think Ill be disappointed.

11oz fibresmith As someone who started off hand piecing and hand quilting everything, youd think Id have been well informed about what needle is best for what, but Im a pretty lazy person and have been slowing using the same two packs of needles I bought over five years ago. Its a crying shame is what it is. If that wasnt tricky enough to remember, a Size 5 of one type of needle doesnt correspond to a Size 5 in another (so a Size 5 Sharp isnt the same size as a Size 5 Quilting). It is great for appliqu because it is thin enough to glide through the fabric smoothly, has a sharp point and doesnt bend as easily as a milliner. I have three sons: Lance (forever 29), Luke 33, Jake 32, and two grand-babies, Little Man and O-Bug. 11oz fibresmith As someone who started off hand piecing and hand quilting everything, youd think Id have been well informed about what needle is best for what, but Im a pretty lazy person and have been slowing using the same two packs of needles I bought over five years ago. Its a crying shame is what it is. If that wasnt tricky enough to remember, a Size 5 of one type of needle doesnt correspond to a Size 5 in another (so a Size 5 Sharp isnt the same size as a Size 5 Quilting). It is great for appliqu because it is thin enough to glide through the fabric smoothly, has a sharp point and doesnt bend as easily as a milliner.
